Respect the meadows that bring value to our waters

• The reason our beaches have such fine, white sand and our waters have that transparent and unique turquoise colour is because of the Posidonia.
• It is a species of native and protected marine plant that, by filtering the waters, maintains the habitat of the marine flora and fauna of our islands.
• Posidonia meadows are a protected asset. There are zones where anchoring is prohibited by law. Please check before anchoring in a prohibited zone.
• It is the largest and oldest living organism on the earth, whose age has been estimated to be around 100,000 years.
• It has fruits, flowers, leaves, stalks and roots. It flowers in autumn and bears fruits known as “sea olives”.
• The meadows generate between 4 and 20 litres of oxygen per square metre daily, being one of the most important sources of oxygenation in the Mediterranean.
• More than 400 plant species and 1,000 animal species inhabit the Posidonia meadows.
• Its destruction would affect local economies that live off fishing and would make the sea bed less interesting.
