Secondary school students visit Marina Port de Mallorca to review marine ecosystem study project

Marina Port de Mallorca was recently visited by a dozen or so Year 10 and 11 students from the Colegio Santa Magdalena Sofía school to review the status of the biofouling traps installed last November and to share their experience with their classmates.

The Year 11s built and installed these traps as part of a Biology project with a view to studying how marine organisms evolve in a real-life port environment.

During the visit, they checked the evolution of the traps submerged at strategic points of the marina and explained the whole process to the Year 10s, who will be taking over and continuing with the project next year.

This work is part of PROBLEU, a European educational initiative linked to the European Union mission "Restore our Oceans and Waters". The programme sets out to foster ocean and freshwater culture through the connection between the educational world, the scientific world and the local community. In this case, the project has focused on the phenomenon of biofouling and the presence of invasive species in the Mediterranean.

"We're proud to partner in initiatives like this, where students not only learn science, but also experience it first-hand. Seeing them explain their work today with such engagement and enthusiasm is a huge reward", said José María Roig, Harbourmaster at Marina Port de Mallorca, after accompanying the students during their visit.

Marina Port de Mallorca enthusiastically supports these types of activities that foster respect for the marine environment and bring young people closer to scientific knowledge through a practical and real-life experience.
